foetuses

Today I draw pictures of foetuses
Charming in their innocence
Floating in inner space
In a bubble, like me
Their skin cannot scar
Their sponge lungs fluid-soaked
I love the outlines of their spines
And the way they sometimes look like fishes

Beneath this serenity, is turmoil
Cells divide and multiply
Bones harden and shift
Ultrasound scans show me alien bodies
Which, strangely, chill me to the bone

They are most grateful for their anchor
I need this too
To tie me to an emotional placenta
Something to give me all I need
While my brain and heart are left to develop

My nails are caked in green from my artistic endeavour
Paintbrushes stand soaking wearily
In the glass of muddied water
Clouded to opacity
My canvas stands proud
My picture born
With a beautiful image of the perpetually unborn

Reminding me of the macabre foetuses left to collect dust
In the biology lab
There was a horse
And a progression of chicks
And mice
And countless other laboratory abortions
Petrified in formaldehyde
To be stared at by daydreamers like me
